Have you ever said to yourself, "I want to start exercising because I know it will help me think clearer."  How about "I am going to the gym because I know it is going to give me more energy."  These are not the most common reasons why most people engage in exercise programs.  I would venture to say that MOST people start an exercise program because they want to lose weight and "LOOKING GOOD!"  Don't get me wrong, we all want to look our best, either for ourselves or others, but is that really the main reason to start exercising?

In this weeks segment, I brought another special guest.  His name is Danny Ribaudo.  Danny is a certified personal trainer and life coach.  He has seen countless clients who all exercise for the same reasons, but he prides himself on what's beyond simply looking good.  On this video Danny shares his top 5 benefits of Exercise beyond "looking good."

Alternative Treatment for Childhood Developmental Disorders

1 in 6 Children will at some point be labeled with a Learning Challenge ie (ADD, ADHD, Dyslexia, etc).  Yes, that is 1 in 6 Children!  The traditional treatments of Ritalin, Tutoring, and Occupational Therapies have shown at best, mediocre results.  How can this be?  They are not addressing the TRUE CAUSE to these challenges.  I have mentioned in an earlier post about "The Functional Disconnection Syndrome", when there is a functional imbalance between the right and left side of the brain.  Simply stated, one side of the brain works very efficiently and the other side not as efficient.  This is why these kids are near genius in some things but not so great with other things.  So treating these kids with drugs and other treatments that don't specifically work with their neurological imbalance will not show the greatest results! What we do at our office is different!  We actually analyze and treat your child's specific neurological imbalance.  No child is exactly the same as another, so the treatment needs to be individualized based on their functional imbalance.  Enjoy this short video about this specific issue!

4 Common Changes in our Function

In order for you to have optimal health, you must have an optimal performing Nervous System.  Your Nervous System comprises of your Brain, Spinal Cord, and all the Spinal Nerves that travel to the muscles, tissues, and organs in your body.  This complex system controls and coordinates everything about who you are.  From your posture to your thoughts to your digestion and immune function, it all is regulated by your nervous system.  In order for us to evaluate how well your nervous system is performing we look for 4 functional changes that occur when our nervous system decreases in function.  These 4 changes are as follows:

  1. Abnormal Sensations
  2. Abnormal Motor Movement
  3. Abnormal Thoughts
  4. Abnormal Posture or Body Contours

Fuel and Activation

Fuel and Activation.  The Nervous System (our Brain and Spinal Cord) needs 2 very important things to survive, Fuel and Activation!  What is Fuel and Activation? 

Fuel comes from the Glucose from the foods that we eat and when that mixes with Oxygen it creates energy.  The Brain is the most oxygen and glucose rich organ in the body and without it the nervous system cannot perform ideally.  Why is this important?  Well in order to have Optimal Health we must have an Optimally functioning Nervous System.  Simply stated, without enough fuel the brain is running on "empty."  If you drove your car with the gas at almost empty every day, how would your car perform?  What if your nervous system is functioning with low fuel?  How would YOU perform!?

Activation!  Activation comes from the Motor and Sensory information that is sent to your Nervous System.  You cannot function without this type of information.  As we move our body we are activating our nervous system, all of our senses (vision, hearing, smell, etc), activate our nervous system.  Without proper stimulation, our brains slowly degenerate!  We all have heard the statement, if you don't use it you lose it!  If you stop using your muscles they eventually start to weaken or atrophy.  Well if you stop activating your brain, it weakens and atropies as well, hence why your health can progressively decline as you age.

I think it is safe to say that we do not have the healthiest nation in the world.  A part of that is contributed to the lack of education about preventative health care.  Most people are educated in a way that says if we are not sick we are health.  Does that really make any sense?  Do you go from healthy to sick in a few days, weeks, or months?  Absolutely not!  Isn't there a period in between there when there is a decreased in function or that we are headed towards sickness and disease?  Why are most doctors not looking at this?  Maybe because their analysis doesn't catch those functional differences!  The first step towards becoming a healthier nation and to have a true health care system is to look for function rather than disease.  I have put together a short video on the functional blood chemistry analysis vs the laboratory blood chemistry analysis.  One prevents sickness and disease, one detects sickness and disease.  Which would you prefer?  Enjoy! :)

Sweeteners that Kill

I'm sure you all are aware of the dangers of consuming too much sugar and have heard that sugar is not healthy for you.  Right?  You may have even been led to believe that artificial sweeteners like Aspartame, Sucralose, or Splenda are safer, and less likely to cause you to gain weight.

If you believe this  you cannot be further from the truth!  Artificial Sugars Destroy your Health and they are in almost everything that claims to be "Diet" "Zero Calorie" or "Sugar-Free."  So what makes artificial sugars so dangerous?  For the purpose of this article, I would like to focus on Aspartame, since that is the most commonly used artificial sugar.  Keep in mind all artificial sugars have similar effects in the body.

What is Aspartame?

Aspartame was discovered in 1965 BY MISTAKE!  A chemist by the name of James M. Schlatter from G.D Searle was working in a laboratory developing a drug to treat peptic ulcers.  Accidentally he spilled one of the chemicals on his finger.  He licked his finger clean and in doing so he discovered that this chemical was extremely sweet and thus Aspartame was found.

Aspartame is 180 times sweeter than natural sugar!  It is composed of Phenylalanine (50%), Aspartic Acid (40%), and Methanol (10%).  Lets break each of these ingredients down to see their effect on the body.

Phenylalanine and Aspartic Acid

Phenylalanine and Aspartic Acid are amino acids combined in an ester bond in Aspartame.  These two amino acids are normally consumed in the foods we eat.  They are harmless when consumed as part of natural, unprocessed foods.  However, when they are chemically altered and consumed outside the normal ranges they become very harmful to our health.

Your body breaks down that ester bond into two free amino acids, free phenylalanine and free aspartic acid.  These amino acids are not meant to be freely in our body especially at such high quantities.  At these high quantities they begin to break through the Blood- Brain Barrier and flood your brain causing excessive firing of the neurons, sometimes causing cellular death.  This is called Excitotoxicity.  Aspartame and other Artificial sugars are Neurotoxins!  They destroy your brain function!

Methanol:

Metanol at high temperatures converts to formaldehyde.  With our body temperature being 98.6 degrees, this conversion happens in your body.  Formaldehyde is normally used in paint thinners and embalming fluid.  Is this something you want in your body? If you are regularly consuming artificial sweeteners, this is happening inside you!  Please be sure to read your labels to see if there are artificial sugars in what you are eating or drinking.

I am not trying to scare anyone, I am here to educate you about the effects of Artificial Sugars such as Slenda, Sweet-N-Low, or Equal, on your body.

Potential Adverse Effects from Aspartame:

  • Migraine Headaches (most common)
  • Changes in Mood (Depression)
  • Changes in Vision
  • Changes in Heart Rate
  • Sleeping problems, Insomnia
  • Memory Loss
  • Nausea and Vomiting
  • Dizziness, Poor Balance and Coordination
  • Attentional/Hyperactivity in Children (ADHD)
  • Convulsions or Seizures
  • Fatigues and Weakness
  • Diarrhea
  • Joint Pain
  • Abdominal Pain or Cramping
  • Hives
  • Increased Risk for Cancers such as Breast and Prostate
